With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, many men are starting to get hints from their wives, fiancée’s, and girlfriends about what romantic gifts they would like to receive.  What do you think of when the word “romance” is mentioned?  For some, flowers, chocolates, hearts, and pearls all fall into this category.  For others, soft music and champagne or wine are romantic.  Basing your wedding around a romantic theme can be a sweet personalized declaration of your relationship.  If you start your life off with romance, it sets the tone for the rest of your marriage.

Color choices for a romantic wedding can be anything you choose, but classic colors like red, pink, white, chocolate, or ivory are easiest to do.  If you want to be a little more unique, consider picking a slightly different shade such as peach or mauve.  Since weddings are by nature a romantic event, you should have a multitude of choices with hearts, champagne flutes, and even castles if you like.

Tulle, twinkle lights, candles, and mirrors should all be incorporated into your decorations.  Candles placed on top of mirrors with rose petals sprinkled here and there make a timeless and stylish table setting.  Perhaps you could place the word “love” in different languages around the room or on your wedding program.  A chocolate fountain is not only beautiful; it also serves as a functional part of your menu.  What is more romantic than chocolate dipped strawberries?  Another idea a wedding planner suggested is a bubble machine set behind your drink table to give the illusion of being in a glass of champagne.  It would also be fun for your bridal party pictures.

If you choose to have a sit-down meal, consider choosing “romantic” foods such as oysters, avocados, basil, and foie gras.  Three courses of asparagus were traditionally served to bridegrooms in 19th-century France at their “rehearsal dinner” because it “stirs up lust in man and woman.”  For your favors, Jordan almonds are the classic choice.  Almonds have been associated with fertility for centuries and so are coupled with romance.

Planning a Wedding On a Shoestring Budget

The task of planning our wedding fell to me mostly because I was a wedding professional–a photographer. Granted, I had lots of contacts in the business but I knew that I’d be treated like anyone else walking through the shop door.

Keep a positive attitude

You need to begin with a very positive attitude and the commitment to produce a successful, memorable event. I have only planned one wedding in my many years as a wedding photographer.

Since my bride-to-be considered me to be the “Expert,” my job was to line up all of the other service providers since the photography part of the event would be covered by my own staff.

Where do you begin

Wow! Where to begin? I had just a few months to get the job done. My goal was to plan a wedding that would create memories that would last a lifetime. So far (11 years later) it looks like I succeeded.

Here are the tasks I had to complete–in order of importance.

1. Select a date and a wedding site: My bride had lived in this city a little more than a year and had no church affiliation. I, on the other hand, was an On Again-Off Again member of a small Episcopal Church. Why should a church be our first choice? TO SAVE MONEY! The wedding date we picked was a Saturday in February–Valentine’s Day! Ahhh, how romantic. Since this was not during the BUSY wedding season I quickly booked the church for an early evening wedding.

2. Reception/Catering: We anticipated 60-70 guests and due to the time of day–a sit-down dinner was appropriate. I had lucked out here as I had just heard about a popular hotel/restaurant that was scheduled for demolition to make way for an Interstate Highway interchange. These folks were anxious to make all the income possible before the wrecking ball began swinging so I got an exceptional deal plus reduced room rates for out-of-town folks.

3. Entertainment: Over the years I had completed several weddings with a local DJ. We had become fast friends. Alan cleared out the date for me. Couples may consider several choices for entertainment that run from an orchestra, a small musical ensemble or recorded music. I have done low budget weddings when the music was supplied by a family member with a “Boom Box.”

These next few steps can be accomplished in any convenient order since the preceding steps should be taken care of ASAP.

A. Wedding Cake: Both of us prefer “Pound Cake,” so we narrowed down the choices to three local bakers. We both started out on a tasting tour and never got beyond the first one visited. Of course I had dome several weddings with this lady and she did flip-flops to accommodate us. Man, was that cake delicious. We may have gotten a little better price had we visited the other two bakers but I doubt if it would have been as good.

B. Formal Wear. Here again I pulled on my experience with having done at least one wedding with every shop in town. My choice number three gave me the best price and they got the order.

Yes, there are quite a few other details to clean up such as: Wedding Invitations, marriage license, limo, etc. A word about invitations–the cost can be cut by about two thirds if you have access to a decent computer and printer. Most office supply stores sell blank invitations and envelopes. Run ‘em yourself. As for party favors, wedding attendant gifts and so forth, try eBay!

The honeymoon didn’t pose any problems. I owned a one week time share at the coast so I made an internal swap to get the date we needed. (maybe you know someone with a timeshare that’ll let you use it. Also we had planned a two week camping trip during the warmer months that included ending up in Maine for a Lobsterfest.

Now you say, “OK, you were in the business so you had all the leads to vendors in hand. What am I to do–starting from scratch?” Yes I did have a head start but you can easily catch up to what I did. See my tips  below.

*  Don’t depend on just the Yellow Pages for your starting points. These ads can be deceptive in that the biggest ad isn’t always the most successful vendor.

*  I didn’t know about Google 11 years ago so you have that in your favor. Put Mr. Google to work for you.

*  Don’t hesitate to thank a shopkeeper and head for the door if you don’t think you’re getting the best deal. These folks know that once you leave, the odds are highly against your coming back.

*  Check with recent brides, family and friends for their experience with certain vendors.

*  And don’t forget to scan Craig’s List for your city. It’s a good source for one-time-used bridal gowns (or not used at all).

*  Seriously consider hiring a wedding director if you plan on having more than 2-3 attendants. Many churches provide a director just to be sure things don’t get screwed up.

*  Two weeks before the wedding call everyone you booked–just to make sure they haven’t gone out of business, developed some rare tropical disease or have been run over by a school bus. “Stuff” happens, if you know what I mean!

*  Develop a contingency plan: Plan for the best, expect the worst: Illness or other problems may prevent a wedding party member from attending, airline flight delays, etc.

*  Winter weddings: What will you do if a blizzard or ice storm strikes

*  Summer outdoor weddings: Have a backup shelter available if it rains or thunderstorms move in.

You will also find some great nightlife in Pattong if you want to celebrate after the ceremony.

Koh Phi Phi is credited as being the most beautiful Thai island, but it is also the most expensive comparatively. The island is a lot smaller than the other islands, and it can get really busy during the high season when accommodation can be hard to come by. If you want a romantic location though, this will be a really good choice.  A nearby island is Koh Lanta and you might want to visit here if you want something a bit quieter.

A wedding in Thailand can really be a great alternative to the traditional wedding and it is sure to be a lot less stressful. The amazing thing is that in many cases it even works out cheaper than the wedding you would have at home. Air fares to Thailand can be expensive, but once you arrive things are quite cheap. A marriage in this tropical paradise will not only be something that you will remember forever, but also an experience that your guests will thank you for.

Every wedding needs a theme. A theme is what ties the wedding together and offers a method to the madness when it comes to choosing everything from the invitations to the guest favors. But, you may be concerned about what kind of theme would work best for your big day. You don’t really want anything cheesy, but you do want something that reflects you and your fiancé’s tastes and personality. Here are so great tips for how to choose a theme.

  1. What time of year is the wedding? Are you planning a outdoor spring or fall wedding, or are you planning poolside nuptials for your mid-summer wedding? No matter what time of year you choose, you should focus on that to help you pick the best theme and color scheme for your ceremony.
  2. Look at the colors you are leaning toward. Pinks and browns don’t really fit a winter wedding, just like bold colors like reds and gold don’t really fit a spring wedding. So, you should investigate your color scheme before you decide on a theme, because they just may guide you to exactly what you are looking for.
  3. You may want to look at upcoming holidays, because the holidays may guide you toward your dream theme. For instance, if your getting married close to Valentine’s Day, maybe a Valentine’s themed wedding with pinks, reds, and white would be the perfect theme for you. Or what if your wedding falls close to Thanksgiving, then maybe you could consider a turkey day themed wedding that centralizes more on the blessing of marriage, instead of just turkeys in general. You could incorporate browns, oranges, and a splash of green to help tie it all together.

Now that you have some tips that may help you choose your perfect theme, here are some great theme ideas that may just be what you are looking for.

  1. “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” theme. This is perfect theme that you can do with or without a Marilyn Monroe/1940’s vibe. You can decorate with lots of Swarovski crystals and have little ring boxes scattered about filled with candy as guest favors. Your invitations can be decked out with glitter and Swarovski crystals, and you can make sure everything from your wedding gown to your cake has lots of bling added to it. You can entertain with some 1940’s big band and jazz music, and you may even consider hiring a jazz band for your big day. This is a fun, girly theme that is perfect for winter or spring.
  2. Moroccan theme. This is a fabulous theme full of rich colors and textures that would be perfect to warm up any cold winters night or heat-up a summer poolside ceremony. You can decorate in rich jewel-toned colors and use lots of crystals and colored gems as accents. You should choose exotic flowers and use lots of candlelight to set just the right ambiance. You could hire a few belly dancers and even invest in a few lounging couches and beds that would be perfect to help your guests relax and enhance the mood. A satchel of spices or tea would be the prefect favor for guests at this type of theme.
  3. Country Charm theme. This is a great theme especially for a summer or fall ceremony and reception. You could have the setting in an old barn house or maybe you could have your ceremony at an old country church and then have your reception outdoors in someone’s big backyard. You can decorate with hay bales covered by checked tablecloths for guests to sit on and you could maybe serve a backyard BBQ style buffet. You may want to consider hiring a country band and keep the attire light and fresh, easy for dancing and having a good time.
  4. Romeo and Juliet theme. This is a truly romantic theme complete with an Italian setting and the romantic ambiance of poetry and young love is perfect any time of year. Choose an Italian-style villa or garden for your ceremony and/or reception, and you should choose gentle, romantic ballet style music as well as soft, pastel colors to truly set the mood. You could have your reception be a masked ball type of thing, and you could even go all out and have your bridal party wear period costumes from Shakespearean era. You could hire actors or just have guests do reading of Shakespearean poetry and maybe even learn some traditional dances from that time period. Whatever you need to do to make the theme really work for you.

Do it yourself wedding centerpieces are inexpensive to make.  They can be somewhat labor intensive however.  Still, they can be made in one fun evening with the help of a bunch of friends, a bottle of wine and some snacks!  It is a good idea to make a sample and see how you like it before making all the others.  If you are using fresh flowers, you need to know how long it takes for them to start drooping.  Do they have to be put together at the last minute, or can they be done a day or two in advance?

There are several things you need to keep in mind:

The following are some seasonal suggestions for wedding centerpieces:

Candles make lovely wedding centerpieces and can be done way in advance.  Votive candles floating in a small glass bowl of potpourri or fresh flower petals.  Take a cake plate and arrange candles of different heights around it, using your colors. Tuck a few fresh flowers around the spaces on the plate just before the reception. Don’t use dried or silk flowers for this purpose as they burn too easily.  Pick up some tiny potted flowers, wrap the pots in tissue and ribbon, and arrange in the center of the table…using them later as favors, of course.

You can also borrow mason jars, fill them halfway with sand and poke dried flowers into them to create wedding centerpieces.  The jars can be spray painted, tissue wrapped, etc. If you prefer fresh flowers, half-fill with water, add rocks and a few flowers.  You can also gather leaves, branches, pine cones, small rocks, and spray paint them silver.  Arrange in the center of the table.  A tall thick candle can be centered in the grouping…again not too close to the sprayed items.

A great idea for place cards is to print the names out on your computer, using a heavier stock paper, Cut them out and simply weave them into the tines of the dinner fork at each place setting!

Wedding Invitations – Choosing the Right Envelopes

Wedding invitations simply do not start and end with the actual invitations. A properly prepared wedding invitation has many key elements to it including card stock, ink color, formality, and last but not least, two envelopes.  Choosing the correct envelope should not be overlooked as it sets the initial impression of your upcoming wedding.

The wedding invitation envelopes are going to be the absolute first thing prospective guests see when they receive your wedding invitations in the mail.  Due to this first impression there are several key things you should consider before ordering your wedding envelopes.  First, you should choose envelopes that are tasteful and possibly reflect the color or theme of the wedding.  Since many envelopes come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and designs, it’s important to consider the invitation as a whole as well, not simply trying to isolate each aspect and designing it piece by piece.

There is a vast selection of wedding invitation styles and themes as well as their counterpart envelopes.  Most invitations are the normal square or rectangle design, however a new popular design emerging is know as pochette.  A pochette has a square shape and folding tabs on each side.  These tabs fold in to create the envelope.  With an array of colors to choose from consider matching the envelope to the bouquet color of your wedding.  Another idea is to pick a color that reflects the time or the theme of the wedding.  For instance, if your wedding were going to take place on Valentine’s Day, you may want to use red or pink as the dominant color throughout the wedding invitation.  If you are going for traditional appeal, consider an envelope made of parchment paper.  Parchment often features a deckled look around the edges which is something that resembles a torn edge.  It helps your invitation appear to be handmade.

When addressing your wedding invitations, etiquette almost demands that they are hand addressed.  While printed address labels are becoming popular as well as having printing companies print them on the envelopes for you, those who are perfectionists about proper etiquette will say that hand addressing them will always be the best thing to do.  Most envelopes are part of a package deal put together by printers but many offer upgrades to the package as well.  You may feel that you’d like some form of lining in your envelopes for instance.  Most printers are willing to work with you to create the perfect package but be forewarned that changes usually equate to additional charges.
