This was incredibly unusual and had certainly not occurred through the 15 a long time they’d been betrothed. Her husband refused to examine it with her and didn’t even effort to generate up a little excuse.

Planning a Wedding On a Shoestring Budget

The task of planning our wedding fell to me mostly because I was a wedding professional–a photographer. Granted, I had lots of contacts in the business but I knew that I’d be treated like anyone else walking through the shop door.

Keep a positive attitude

You need to begin with a very positive attitude and the commitment to produce a successful, memorable event. I have only planned one wedding in my many years as a wedding photographer.

Since my bride-to-be considered me to be the “Expert,” my job was to line up all of the other service providers since the photography part of the event would be covered by my own staff.

Where do you begin

Wow! Where to begin? I had just a few months to get the job done. My goal was to plan a wedding that would create memories that would last a lifetime. So far (11 years later) it looks like I succeeded.

Here are the tasks I had to complete–in order of importance.

1. Select a date and a wedding site: My bride had lived in this city a little more than a year and had no church affiliation. I, on the other hand, was an On Again-Off Again member of a small Episcopal Church. Why should a church be our first choice? TO SAVE MONEY! The wedding date we picked was a Saturday in February–Valentine’s Day! Ahhh, how romantic. Since this was not during the BUSY wedding season I quickly booked the church for an early evening wedding.

2. Reception/Catering: We anticipated 60-70 guests and due to the time of day–a sit-down dinner was appropriate. I had lucked out here as I had just heard about a popular hotel/restaurant that was scheduled for demolition to make way for an Interstate Highway interchange. These folks were anxious to make all the income possible before the wrecking ball began swinging so I got an exceptional deal plus reduced room rates for out-of-town folks.

3. Entertainment: Over the years I had completed several weddings with a local DJ. We had become fast friends. Alan cleared out the date for me. Couples may consider several choices for entertainment that run from an orchestra, a small musical ensemble or recorded music. I have done low budget weddings when the music was supplied by a family member with a “Boom Box.”

These next few steps can be accomplished in any convenient order since the preceding steps should be taken care of ASAP.

A. Wedding Cake: Both of us prefer “Pound Cake,” so we narrowed down the choices to three local bakers. We both started out on a tasting tour and never got beyond the first one visited. Of course I had dome several weddings with this lady and she did flip-flops to accommodate us. Man, was that cake delicious. We may have gotten a little better price had we visited the other two bakers but I doubt if it would have been as good.

B. Formal Wear. Here again I pulled on my experience with having done at least one wedding with every shop in town. My choice number three gave me the best price and they got the order.

Yes, there are quite a few other details to clean up such as: Wedding Invitations, marriage license, limo, etc. A word about invitations–the cost can be cut by about two thirds if you have access to a decent computer and printer. Most office supply stores sell blank invitations and envelopes. Run ‘em yourself. As for party favors, wedding attendant gifts and so forth, try eBay!

The honeymoon didn’t pose any problems. I owned a one week time share at the coast so I made an internal swap to get the date we needed. (maybe you know someone with a timeshare that’ll let you use it. Also we had planned a two week camping trip during the warmer months that included ending up in Maine for a Lobsterfest.

Now you say, “OK, you were in the business so you had all the leads to vendors in hand. What am I to do–starting from scratch?” Yes I did have a head start but you can easily catch up to what I did. See my tips  below.

*  Don’t depend on just the Yellow Pages for your starting points. These ads can be deceptive in that the biggest ad isn’t always the most successful vendor.

*  I didn’t know about Google 11 years ago so you have that in your favor. Put Mr. Google to work for you.

*  Don’t hesitate to thank a shopkeeper and head for the door if you don’t think you’re getting the best deal. These folks know that once you leave, the odds are highly against your coming back.

*  Check with recent brides, family and friends for their experience with certain vendors.

*  And don’t forget to scan Craig’s List for your city. It’s a good source for one-time-used bridal gowns (or not used at all).

*  Seriously consider hiring a wedding director if you plan on having more than 2-3 attendants. Many churches provide a director just to be sure things don’t get screwed up.

*  Two weeks before the wedding call everyone you booked–just to make sure they haven’t gone out of business, developed some rare tropical disease or have been run over by a school bus. “Stuff” happens, if you know what I mean!

*  Develop a contingency plan: Plan for the best, expect the worst: Illness or other problems may prevent a wedding party member from attending, airline flight delays, etc.

*  Winter weddings: What will you do if a blizzard or ice storm strikes

*  Summer outdoor weddings: Have a backup shelter available if it rains or thunderstorms move in.

I do hope these tips have been of some value to you. But please don’t stop here. My friends Tim and Lisa Spooner have an interesting story to tell. They managed to whittle down a $20,000 Dream Wedding to $2,000–and it turned out far better than they ever expected. Stop by and visit them and they’ll give you a FREE WEDDING BUDGET CALCULATOR!

Budget Wedding Planner

You have always dreamed about having the perfect wedding surrounded by all your family and friends with lots of flowers, beautiful music and an exceptional reception. Suddenly, you realize that your dream wedding can be very costly. With the right planning your ideal wedding can be achieved if you follow some guidelines.

Once you have set a date for your wedding, the next thing to do is to come up with a budget wedding planner to help you stay focused and that details most of the things required for your wedding. Your planner should include things as a budget, number of guests, location, time of day, theme, colors, formality, etc…

When you have a plan in place then it’s time to move on with more specific details.

1. Plan everything as far ahead as possible. Many times when planning something months ahead in advanced you are able to get better deals with caterers, reception halls, musicians, etc…

2. Compare prices with several businesses that provide the services you need for your event. Use your bargaining skills and see who can give you the cheapest deal.

3. Bigger is not necessarily better. Don’t think that a bigger wedding is better than a small one. A big wedding is going to cost more and it will require a bigger place, more food, more drinks, more wedding favors, etc… therefore, more money.

4. A small wedding can be more modest yet more warm and cozy with only your closest family members and friends. It will also be less expensive because it will require a smaller place, less food, drinks, etc…

5. Keep track of everything you spend on. Small things can add up to large amounts; therefore, causing for you to go over budget.

6. Accept any help from family and friends. A little help here and there will make a big difference on your budget in the long run.

7. Don’t fall under pressure to do things you had not planned to do or have at your wedding. Accept any given suggestions and only do those that fit your budget.

If you follow your budget wedding planner, it’s very likely that your spending won’t go over budget. Remember, keep track of every single expense you make, only invite close family and friends, bargain with vendors and accept any help from those close to you. May your wedding day turn out to be what you always dreamed about and your happiest day ever.

You should also practice taking shots at different times of the day.  As a San Diego photographer we get plenty of sunshine. But even then you have to know how to use the sunshine for your photos.  By taking different photos of different times of day you will learn what works and what doesn’t.  As you get better you can really capture great shots based upon the time of day.

Going to big events is another great way to practice your camera skills.Events like festivals or county fairs.  Or events like a sports game.  Even a child’s soccer game is a great event to take pictures.  Doing San Diego portrait photographer has allowed to realize how different the kind of photos you take at big events are.  By practicing at various events you can get good at taking action shots.

Alternative Wedding Ideas That Reflect the Couple’s Personal Interests

If you are planning a wedding, but want something other than the traditional ceremony, there are several alternative  themes and locations to choose from.  You do not have to feel bound by tradition; your wedding is your special day and can be anything you like.

The Beach Wedding

Beach weddings are beautiful with the sand and water.  When choosing this type of wedding there are some things to consider.  You should check with your local government office to see if there are any permits required and if there are any fees.  You also want to take into account the time of day, and the season.  In most places temperatures are warmer in the middle of the day, so you may want to plan accordingly.  When deciding on the season you want to think about which seasons bring large amounts of rain, you do not want your big day to be rained out.

Beach weddings usually require fewer rentals; you may want to rent a tent just in case it rains.  You can also decide if you want to rent chairs, or have your guests stand.  There may also be a need for some type of sound system, depending on how large your ceremony will be.

Beach weddings can be simple and beautiful.  A simple short ceremony with close family and friends fits well with this theme.

A Wedding in the Park
Holding your wedding in a park is also a great idea.  If you decide on the park you still have all of the outdoor beauty, without the added water, sand, and wind.  These weddings can also be simple and delicate, or large and elaborate, depending on your personal preference.  You should be sure to check with your local government office to see if there are any permits or fees required with this location as well.

Theaters
Theaters are a bit less common, but work very nicely.  Most theaters already have a stage, chairs, a sound system, and dressing rooms.  A great aspect about the theater option is that you can decorate it in any theme that you like.

Sporting Arenas
If you are a big baseball or football fan, you may want to consider having it on the field at your favorite stadium.  This is definitely an original concept, although it may be a little costly to rent out the location.  You could even take the ceremony a step further and have your wedding party dress in sporting uniforms.

Museums

Museums are usually exquisitely decorated and perfect for a wedding ceremony.  If you do not want to bother with visitors to the museum stopping in on your ceremony, you may want to see if you can rent the entire building out, or if there are certain days the museum is closed to the public.  Depending on the size of the museum, you may also want to consider the amount of parking available.  This would be a great location, however, if you love history.

A Hotel or Bed and Breakfast
Many hotels have banquet rooms that would work well for a wedding ceremony.  They usually provide everything that you need including chairs, a sound system, and some even provide catering.  It is also a great idea to check out the local Bed and Breakfast faculties in your area.  Some of these are located in beautiful historical homes with lovely gardens that would be perfect for a wedding.

When deciding on your wedding location and ceremony, consider the things that are important to you.  What about the place that you’re first met?  Is there a location that you and your finance love to visit and spend time?  Do you have a strong love for sports?  Do you love to golf?  You are only limited by your imagination.

Selecting music for your wedding reception

The best wedding reception music gets guests into the right frame of mind and keeps the party’s momentum going strong.

When choosing the perfect musical backdrop that is sure to inspire scenes worthy of the wedding photo album, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Style of music

This will make a big difference when it comes to who decides to join in the festivities. If you want to be friendly to all generations, make sure you tell the DJ or band to mix current hits with old favorites from previous decades.

You may also want to take your wedding’s style into account when deciding on a musical genre. A formal, classy affair may warrant a live band playing swing music or a string quartet, while a relaxed event may call for a hoe-down or a funk band. In any case, choosing the right performers is vital for getting those picture-perfect shots for the wedding album.

Budget

Determining how much you want to spend on reception music may help determine whether you opt for a band (typically more expensive) or a DJ (usually more budget-friendly). Make sure you call prospective performers well in advance and see what they charge based on time of day, day of the week and length of the event.

Location

Think about the potential restrictions of your reception location before making any commitments. How big is the space? Do they have noise limits that must be adhered to? Is there space to dance? Where do you plug in speakers?

Your preferences

You should also consider how involved you would like the band or DJ to be in your big day. Some couples choose to have them set the pace for the entire reception, announcing dance contests and paying tribute to members of the family. Make sure you give clear instructions on preferences for your first dance and any other special dances you want to include. Many couples choose to provide DJs with a specific playlist.
