The father of the bride speech is special; none of the others can compare, even though each speech that is given during the reception is important. This can become emotional and is generally one of the longer speeches. While no father is anxious to give his daughter away, the father of the bride speech is your opportunity to be genuine and express to your daughter and her new husband how much they mean to you.

Before making it to the rehearsal it is vital you plan ahead and write a speech from the heart. The benefit of writing a father of the bride speech is you do not have to worry about any planning whatsoever. Therefore, you have far more time to think about what you want to say and write out a few drafts.

Don’t even think about trying to speak off the cuff. Way too many fathers try to speak extemporaneously and just wind up rambling endlessly and with no real point at all. You may feel like breaking down, and may find yourself stumbling on the stage. Knowing in advance exactly what you want to express can help smooth the way for getting through the speech without breaking down.

As you go through your speech, you want to put a lot of heart and emotion into it. This is your little girl that has just gotten married. Talk about when she was a child or some special memories you will forever cherish. While there is nothing wrong with poking fun at her or telling an embarrassing story, try not to make it too uncomfortable. This is her special day and you do not want to reveal too much.

Also while making your father of the bride speech, be sure you direct some of your comments to the groom. After all, this man is going to be caring for your daughter from this day forward. Be sure to tell him how happy you are for the both of them, and how glad you are that the two of them found each other.

As the day arrives and you find yourself up on the stage giving the wedding speech, take a deep breath and perhaps a drink of water to calm the nerves. Although you may think you will hold it together, it is always smart to bring a tissue or handkerchief with just in case. If you do begin to cry or breakdown, take a second and hold it together. This is what makes your speech so special.

Take your time — that’s the last thing you need to remember. There is absolutely no reason to rush through your speech. Force yourself to deliver the speech at a calm, even pace, even if you are nervous. Your father of the bride speech will sound so much more smooth and professional, while making it possible to express every idea you outlined when you drafted it.
